Getting in at the ground level and building a strong foundation is the key to a long and successful career in sales.
During your first year make sure you learn everything you can about the company, ask lots of questions and do more listening than talking. Seek feedback where appropriate, find a mentor, and volunteer for any projects that will help you gain experience.
Expect to work extra hours (see chart below:) and get to know the people inside and outside of your department - and of course be nice to everyone!
Be in it for the long haul, seek opportunities for professional and personal development and most of all have fun. Remember it will take approximately 5 – 7 years to become a truly competent sales professional so don’t expect miracles on day one and make sure you show respect to your peers.
Nothing beats experience and the ONLY way to get it is to attend a few thousand face-to-face meetings yourself.
NOTE: myfirstsalesjob ® do NOT recruit Telemarketing or Telesales staff for call centres.
